Wheel Diameter / RPM 

The following set of charts will help you to determine the speed at which your combat robot will move if given the RPM and the diameter of the wheel. For easier reading the Wheel Diameter / RPM chart has been broken down into four smaller charts. The calculated velocity is read in Feet Per Second (FPS). The legend has been color coded to help you get an approximation of how your combat robot will perform as you change wheel diameter and the RPM. Performance characteristics such as acceleration and drivability of your combat robot  will vary significantly depending on the output torque of your motors, type of drive system be it 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, track drive and how the weight of your combat robot is distributed over the wheels. 

0 - 1.9 fps  / 0 - 1.3 mph - Slow or very small bots such as Ants and kilobots

2.0 - 4.9 fps / 1.3 - 3.4 mph Typical speed of bots in the 1 kg, 3 lb weight divisions

5.0 - 7.9 fps / 3.4 - 5.4 mph Fast for small bots such as 3 lb or 6 lb, typical speed of 12 lb robots 

8.0 - 11.9 fps / 5.4 - 8.1 mph This is the speed of a 30 or 60 lb robot. Some bots with substantial horizontal spinning weapons in the larger weight divisions will move at this speed. Slow for most ram bots or a wedges even in the 30 lb weight division. 

12.0 - 15.9 fps / 8.1 - 10.8 mph For bots in the 60 - 220 lb range these speeds are typical, however this is still slow for wedges, rams and bricks.

16.0 - 19.9 fps / 10.8 - 13.6 mph Fast for most larger bots. Robots with substantial spinning weapons will be difficult to drive at faster speeds unless a gyroscope has been installed to correct for the gyroscopic effect of the spinning weapon.

20.0 - 24.9 fps / 13.6 - 17.0 mph Very fast for any robot over 30 lbs. Robots with substantial spinning weapons will be difficult to drive. Good driving skills are necessary to operate a combat robot effectively at these speeds. Good traction will be needed to avoid excess wheel spin. At these speeds wedges and ram bots can be very effective.

25.0 - 29.9 fps / 17.0 - 20.4 mph Not only are good driving skills a necessity at these speeds but so is traction. You will need powerful motors especially in larger combat robots to accelerate to these speed in the arena. Ram bots and wedges need to be built very solid to handle impacts.

30.0 - 34.9 fps / 20.4 - 23.8 mph These speeds are not unheard of in large combat robots with powerful motors, huge batteries and great traction. 

35.0 - 39.9 fps / 23.8 - 27.2 mph Some bots can attain these speeds. Besides having powerful motors, superior traction and batteries capable of delivering the current required, these speeds are difficult to attain unless in the large arenas.

40.0 - 44.9 fps / 27.2 - 31.6 mph You have got to be kidding.
